Terrain Building

The bard sings into the cavern. The acoustics are really good in here!

I designed a dungeon where the final area on the map suggested a ziggurat, but the vertical axis didn’t have the desired impact on a battle mat. So, I built some terrain for our session using polystyrene foam bricks. My partner was able to add a coat of paint before we had the session.

What’s Been Going on in Strierbridge: A Brief History of What Your Characters Have Stepped In; Or, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Dendar the Night Serpent, but Were Afraid to Ask (Campaign Backstory)

Dendar by Jason A. Engel

Once upon a time, a wrong-side-of-the law adventuring group from Aberland called The Whitesnakes sailed to Yuanterio on the southern continent in search of arcane relics of the Night Serpent, Dendar. Led by the charismatic bard Daviton Cloverdale-Sykes, the Whitesnakes left behind the Strier river delta for fame, power, and fortune abroad. Once in the rocky, desert coast of Yuanterio, the Whitesnakes encountered a cult to Dendar. The yuan-ti were led by the half-woman, half-serpent priestess Talash, a warlock who ruled through acts of terror and received magical powers in return. Episode 13: Dungeon & Cavern Maps

Team Tealight descended a long, dark, and winding tunnel of roughly hewn rock, following a trail of red candles along the floor. They crouched and stumbled across loose stones, rock fragments, and scree before finding the path crossing onto the flagstones of a hallway. They cautiously approached the first door.

The first door is on the far left of the map. Below is where they explored in Episode 13: “What Lies Beneath Honorbow Keep.” Descriptions can be found in the episode recap and in The Story.

Insert diffident apology for my sloppy drawing skills here. Still new to mapmaking and dungeon design.

Navigating the Site

Greetings, adventurer!

Welcome to Adventures in Aberland, where I’ve been keeping gameplay recaps to follow the story of Team Tealight as they find their way around the kingdom of Aberland. As a first time DM, I decided to build my own world, too. “How’s that been?” you might wonder.

This blog is here to keep track of the ups and downs and the story the players and I are creating.

The Adventurers page features brief bios of the player characters. The NPC page is under construction, but features bios on some of the more important characters Team Tealight has met. Locations features maps, as do posts tagged “Cartography.”

You might want to start with The Story, which is the most condensed summary of our episodes to date. You can also find recaps of each session (tagged “Episode Recaps”), handouts (tagged “Visuals” and “In game handouts”), and some reflections about running the game in posts tagged “Behind the DM Screen.”

Finally, there’s even a running list of what we eat and drink at each session because it might be cool to remember that one day.

Thanks for visiting.
